David Bowie in Australia filming the music video for Let’s Dance, 1983

okay history time;

when this music video was filmed, Aboriginals still weren’t allowed in the same toilets/bars/schools etc as the European settlers, so it was pretty shocking when Bowie took these few Aboriginal people into this white-bar & they started dancing to his music. after a couple minutes of confusion, all the white people in the bar joined in the dancing & didn’t even question that they were dancing with Aboriginal people (bowie explains this in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine back in the 80’s) and of course this video was pretty popular & was watched by so many white Australians who eventually came to realise the point Bowie was trying to make.

so, as an Australian, i think that what Bowie did with this video was so important in minimising some of the Aboriginal discrimination which has definitely decreased over the years, yet is unfortunately sometimes still present. basically, this music video is really iconic here in Australia & thank you Bowie for helping Aus out a little bit👏🏻👏🏻
